Machine
Machine was a joint exhibition with Gary Whitworth at the Sassoon Gallery, Peckham.
A unifying theme in this exhibition is the process of fabrication as subject matter. Whitworth has used basic construction materials, found and altered objects in order to make a series of possible tools and machines. He draws upon the development of human technologies and questions the relationship between the body and object. Alton uses carefully defined rules and pre-structured arrangements to unpick the objects of her scrutiny. She is interested in the tactility of technology, and the point at which a mechanical, electronic or theoretic system becomes physically apprehendable. Both artists consider the act of drawing to be central to their practice, from which ideas emerge and evolve.
